In a recent interview with ESPN, amid fuzzy lighting effects and the slightest hint of an angelic halo, immensely tanned New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez attempted to set the record straight on his use of a banned substance from 2001 and 2003.
Some say it was an apology. Rodriguez has since gone on to blame his actions on being ‘young and stupid’ and a bad influence set by his cousin (or ‘needle’ in Spanish). Claiming he had no knowledge what was contained in an over-the-counter substance known as “Boli”, Rodriguez still decided it wise to try it out.
This is an era where many sporting greats are born in and live in their teens. For a professional athlete (yes, even baseball players are considered to be athletes) to blame youthful naivety for his actions at a time when he was in his mid twenties is laughable.
To claim that anabolic steroids were or ever have been sold over the counter is a desperate attempt to not only save face but also to avoid being subpoenaed in order to reveal his suppliers. With the buzz of Oscar season still upon us, A-Rod’s performance was daytime TV-worthy at best.
